Country Economist
UNDP Nepal is hiring a Country Economist to provide economic analysis, policy advice, and support on development financing, SDG integration, and regional collaboration.

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nepal is looking for a Country Economist to lead economic policy advice and development solutions that promote inclusive and resilient growth. The Economist will work with national and local governments, development partners, and internal UNDP teams to support SDG implementation, improve national financing systems, and guide large-scale programming. This role includes regional collaboration through UNDP’s Asia-Pacific Economist Network and supports knowledge-sharing across countries and policy sectors.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide economic and development policy advice to national and local stakeholders
• Support UNDP programme planning and strategy development
• Lead research and analysis on inclusive growth, SDGs, and financing solutions
• Promote integration of SDGs into national planning and budgeting
• Collaborate with other economists in the Asia-Pacific region
• Represent UNDP in policy forums and contribute to knowledge products
• Advise on development finance, including innovative models and partnerships
• Coordinate across UNDP teams to support sustainable development portfolios
Eligibility to apply
Education:
• Master’s degree in Economics or related field
• Bachelor’s degree in Economics plus two additional years of relevant experience will also be considered
• PhD in Economics is an advantage
Experience:
• Minimum 7 years (with master’s) or 9 years (with bachelor’s) in development finance, economic policy, or research
• Experience preparing policy briefs, advising on SDG integration, and managing partnerships
• Regional or international experience, especially in Asia-Pacific, preferred

• Knowledge of national development strategies
Preferred Knowledge:
• Experience with Development Finance Assessment and Integrated National Financing Frameworks
• Understanding of economic transformation, multidimensional poverty, and inclusive growth
• Familiarity with public-private partnerships and regional development issues
